Alternative Solutions

We had a couple alternative solutions on how to reduce smoking at Purdue:

Keep everything exactly the same: This solution involves not changing any of the regulations or enforcements that are currently implemented. Smokers would still be able to smoke within 30 feet of most buildings. However, the problem with this idea is that, currently, the 30-foot law is not well enforced. Smokers generally smoke as close as a couple feet away from the buildings. This would not change.

Another alternative we had was to ban smoking outright at Purdue. However, this would likely create unrest and unhappiness with the student population. Also, enforcing this rule would be a problem. Would they be as strict as the drug regulations. Would they be as lenient as the jaywalking regulations. It would be very difficult to make a fair regulation regarding an outright ban of smoking.
